What is Reflex Integration?

Primitive Reflex Integration

Reflex integration is a process to help a neurological arc that has both a specific stimulus and a predictable response or responses work more efficiently. Primitive reflexes lay the foundation for the nervous system and continue to work in concert with it throughout our lives. They first appear to orchestrate the development of our nervous system and are present for our survival. Once they have played their part, ideally they step back and wait until they are needed for a quick response, often for one’s safety. Reflex Integration means the reflex arc is connected and communicating; it works to meet the nervous system’s requests. When there is an incomplete or weak connection, we call the reflex unintegrated, active, or retained. Thus the reflex may play constantly, disrupting communication coming into the brainstem and blocking some information from reaching the prefrontal lobes. Reflex Integration can be accomplished in several ways, Quantum Reflex Integration uses cold laser to integrate primitive reflexes. Nutrition, movement, low-stress environment, and other factors effect reflex integration.

As human life begins to develop in the womb, the first subtle stirrings of the reflex symphony take place. These initial reflexes emerge in the embryo’s early days, sounding the opening notes of the symphony as they contribute to both the fetus’s survival and its physical and neurological development.

These primitive reflexes set the stage for all that is to follow, and in conjunction they prepare the way for a complex network of neurological connections. This system, benefits from reflex integration and improves a vast array of abilities that encompass cognition, motor control, psychological development, learning, and behavior.

One of the earliest reflexes to appear is a spinal reflex known as the spinal Galant reflex. This reflex begins to develop as the sacrum forms at the bottom of the spine, creating a vibration that triggers the development of auditory processing in the vestibular system. Another early arrival is the fear paralysis reflex, which prompts the fetus to become motionless or “freeze,” protecting him from potentially harmful toxins and chemicals that may gain access to the womb. This freezing action also benefits the mother, during a stressful or dangerous situation, by allowing her to focus on the emergency at hand which allows her to draw on all her resources, thereby contributing to the survival of both.

In addition to the spinal Galant and fear paralysis reflexes, other reflexes appear in utero, including the Moro, stepping, hands-grasping, Babinski, and tonic labyrinthine reflexes, among others.

For nine months, these developing reflexes contribute to the emerging symphony, reaching a crescendo at the moment of birth. Several reflexes play a key role in allowing the fetus to go through the birth process, making it possible for one of the more miraculous movements in the symphony to unfold. First, we have the Moro reflex, which produces cortisol and adrenaline to help activate the birth process. Then the asymmetrical tonic neck reflex (ATNR) comes into play, acting much like a corkscrew as it causes the first rotation as the fetus initiates the journey down the birth canal. The Bauer crawling, spinal Perez, and spinal Galant reflexes orchestrate the further movements that are necessary for the birth to progress. After the baby is delivered, the Moro reflex triggers her first breath and prompts the infant to straighten out after months in the womb.

Once the baby is born, the creation of the symphony is far from over. Indeed, some of the participating reflexes become more evident. Soon after birth, the sucking reflex activates the movements that allow the mouth to suck and swallow, while others support defensive responses so that the newborn may alert others when she is in danger. As these various reflexes emerge during the first weeks and months of life, some reflexes are integrated, as new ones take their place. Ideally, all unfolds on schedule, with the notes being played as they have been “written,” so to speak. Reflexes emerge, contribute to myriad aspects of development, and then integrate, folding back into the system. Integration represents a completed neurological connection that works in concert with the nervous system.

As we will read further in “The Symphony of Reflexes,” an unintegrated (retained) reflex can limit or obstruct a child’s development in countless ways. There are many factors that can cause a reflex to be retained, and unfortunately, these factors are on the rise.

Leading the Way in Rethinking Special Needs Education

QRI therapist, Dr. JoQueta Handy, Ph.D., CCC-SLP featured in the Huffington Post by Mario Martinez Lopez

It takes tenacity, confidence, and unfettered passion to make it as an entrepreneur in this world. Only an entrepreneur with these traits can identify a problem within the community, create a solution to that problem, and effectively communicate to buyers that they have solved a problem for them. That is exactly what one special needs doctor has done to provide a much-needed service, using her passion-driven insight to solve a serious societal issue.

Dr. JoQueta Handy, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, has dedicated her professional life to the understanding and betterment of special needs education both at home and in school. If you ask Dr. Handy, the current state of the special needs education system is undoubtedly broken, but through her new, innovative learning regimen, and backed by a number of biotechnology companies, she believes this education barrier can be broken down to create a new generation of brilliant children. Dr. Handy uses three types of entrepreneurial thinking to break the boundaries of special needs education and throw the door open to learning.

Identify the problem

Identifying a problem is the first step of entrepreneurial innovation. The most recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder—a 30% increase from just two years previous. With this daunting statistic looming, Dr. Handy has spent 12 years analyzing the education of children, a project that began as a collaboration with teachers and parents to devise ways to more effectively teach children with learning disabilities. Recently, Handy decided to visit a classroom to get an insider’s perspective.

“I was visiting an Autism Spectrum Disorder class and noticed there was a movie playing in the background and all the children were glued to iPads,” says Handy. “I asked ‘What’s the lesson plan?’ and the teacher said that this was the lesson plan. I was shocked and taken aback.”

Even when there is a lesson plan in place, Handy believes they often are ill-fitting to children with special needs and just end in disinterest and frustration.

“We say there is a standard in special education, but there isn’t really,” says Handy. “Standardized testing just makes the child become a grade, a statistic, a number, and they are forgotten about.”

The problem with this way of thinking is that the individual needs of these young people are not acknowledged. Handy saw this way of thinking being treated as a norm in schools and decided to act upon it. The next step was to devise a course of action to approach effectively the problem.

Shift the paradigm

Most innovation comes as a result of thinking about things in a new light. This paradigm shift has led to breakthroughs such as discovering the link between autism and a critical chemical in the brain. Through her work in the field, Handy had her own revelation. This lack of education is not the student’s fault, or even the teacher’s. It is a fault in the system.

“It’s not because students with special needs aren’t capable. It’s because they aren’t given the opportunity,” says Handy. “Special needs curriculum is built around a concept of minimal gains, not trying to bridge the gap and realizing these children’s potential.”

Working directly in the classroom inspired Handy to look at special needs education with a different perspective. Instead of hoping a student adheres to a set of expectations, why not focus on the learner’s strengths and abilities? It was through this concept that Handy came to develop her specialized education regimen which she calls the Children’s Opportunity for Brilliance (COB).

To break the mold and provide a new way to do or think about something is the essence of what being an entrepreneur is. And more often than not, these paradigm-shifting ideas don’t just come out of thin air—it requires one to look at the situation from all angles and to find the approach that offers the most benefit to the consumer.

Scale the model

The COB model looks to combat traditional special needs education—instead of focusing on what the child can’t do, this method builds off of the child’s strengths to help realize their potential. The COB model is based on the need of the child and brings in a community effort—from teachers, parents, and doctors—in order to identify effective methods on a case-by-case basis.

Handy’s teaching method goes beyond special needs education, however. Handy says the method can be used for any curriculum and at any level of learning. This is because it is simply a way of understanding how each person can use their abilities to learn in the most effective way. Internal research conducted to evaluate the COB model saw a 70 percent improvement in students after just 16 hours of one-on-one instruction.

In congruence with the COB model, Handy also partnered with several institutions to augment her program’s effectiveness. Through her understanding as an Integrative Medicine doctor, she utilizes various supplements to promote healthy nutrition in her students. She has also partnered with various biotech companies to help her process. These technologies include BrainTap, a mind development tool that induces relaxation and reduces stress on the body, and Quantum Reflex Integration, which helps reduce excessive reflex tendencies.

Dr. Handy’s brilliance in identifying the problem, shifting the paradigm, and scaling are outgrowths of one rare, exceptional quality: Listening to your audience. Listening, ultimately, is the heart of entrepreneurship. Handy refers to her students as her “master teachers” who have guided her to create the program that she believes will be the catalyst to a paradigm shift in education.

“I have learned so much through these students, namely that we need to reject disease-based thinking,” says Handy. “It’s about looking at the student’s strengths and looking past labels that we always seem to put on a person.”

Dangers Of Baby Walkers

Babies who use baby walkers are at risk for serious physical injury as well as mental and developmental delays, according to pediatric studies. Ironically, these delays were even noted in walking.

In a study of 109 babies published in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics in October, 2010, babies using the newest walkers learned to sit upright, crawl, and walk later than those who never used walkers or who used old-style walkers that allow seeing the legs.

The large tray used on new-style walkers blocks observation of the legs, denying the visual feedback necessary for learning how to move through space. The tray also prevents the grasping and exploring of objects that are critical to early development.

The unnatural upright movement of the child in the walker may cause overdevelopment of the calf muscles, which can lead to toe walking, while inadequate development may occur in the hips and upper legs.

In addition, on a standard test of mental development, no-walker babies had the highest scores, followed by those who used older, “see-feet” walkers and last by those using new walkers. The study noted that babies using new walkers may also be delayed in the development of memory, learning, and language skills.

Other investigators, say the authors, have found that developmentally-challenged babies, babies born prematurely, and very young babies are especially likely to have balance and alignment problems caused by walkers.

Use of walkers can lead to less desire or time to crawl, an essential element in developing neurological reflexes. Due to the unnatural posture, the Babinski, leg cross flexion, and foot tendon guard reflexes may be delayed in integrating. The ATNR, Bauer crawling, and stepping reflexes also may be delayed due to obstruction of the view of legs and feet.

Besides developmental delays, baby walkers are responsible for more injuries than any other children’s product, according to a 1994 report by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.  Canada went so far as to ban baby walkers in 2004, but in some countries, more than 75% of parents still purchase them.

A major cause of injuries is the speed of the walker. Speed quickly takes the baby out of the caregiver’s range of control, preventing rescue before a collision or encounter with stairs, the swimming pool, sharp objects, dangerous chemicals, or hot appliances. Injuries include head damage, broken bones and teeth, burns, trapped fingers, and even death. Take the dangers of baby walkers into consideration before you make your purchase.

The Symphony of Reflexes by Bonnie Brandes

“In The symphonySymphony of Reflexes: Interventions for Autism, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, and Human Development, Bonnie L. Brandes, MEd, provides a thorough discussion of these primitive reflexes and then presents specific movements in her program, “QRI Brain Boost,” designed to help children with learning disabilities and neurological conditions. As the founder of Quantum Reflex Integration, QRI®, the author uses acu-reflex points and cold laser to integrate primitive reflexes. Her programs are used in over thirty countries.

The timing of this book could not be better, because the incidence of autism and other sensory and neurological disorders continues to climb at an alarming rate, a rate that cannot be exclusively explained by better labeling or improved diagnostic techniques. Understanding primitive reflexes and the role they play in neurological and social development is the key to healing this newest generation.

The Symphony of Reflexes is not only a guide for the recovery of the nervous system for those with autism, ADHD, and other learning disabilities, but also a guide for human development and maximizing human potential.

Finally, Bonnie brings to life environmental factors, such as stress during pregnancy, diet and nutrition, EM Radiation, and the Brain-Gut relationship, as well as the ever-growing amount of toxic chemicals that are part of our environment. Being aware of the potential causes is a key step in securing a healthier future for ourselves and the next generation of children.

Bonnie has assembled an incredible amount of information and organized it in a helpful and straightforward manual. No matter how we are interacting with our environment, whether we are catching a ball, riding a bike, or holding a paint brush, each of these activities have their roots in The Symphony of Reflexes.” —Dr. Donald Gerken DC, DACCP, CSTD

“With ADD, ADHD and autism being disorders resulting from non-typical neural development, it makes sense to address the reflexes which are the foundation of neural development. Important, “must have” information for a classroom teacher or a parent with concerns about a child’s success in the classroom. I wish I had this information 18 years ago when my son was first diagnosed with autism at age 3. Investigating reflex integration 10 years ago, there were only expensive and lengthy therapies available. I believe the therapies that we did pursue would have had faster and longer lasting results with integrated reflexes. This book provides information so that parents can guide their children through exercises in their home and get results. I cannot think of a better gift to a child than having a neurological system that is able to perform the way it is supposed to perform. Get it, read it, do it.”

How QRI Differs From Other Reflex Integration Programs

Primitive reflexlaying-on-table integration using cold laser differs from other reflex integration programs in many ways.  QRI sessions are shorter, children often ask for the laser, and lie quietly during a session. The laser is placed on a series of points and patterns. For young active children, sessions can be given while the child sleeps. Unlike other reflex integration methods, we do not focus on 1-2 reflexes at a time. We follow a specific order which eliminates the need for primitive reflex assessments.

QRI acu-point and acu-point patterns are easy to follow and offered in an online class, in-person classes, and a comprehensive manual. These points are used in combination with cold laser. The QRI Home program is followed by parents in over 40 countries.

Cold Laser has been used in over 8,000 studies without any negative side effects noted. It has been used in Asia and Europe for over 50 years. That being said, adding the QRI points not only integrates primitive reflexes, but give an all-over body balance. Noticeable improvements in behavior, cognition, and movement are seen, sometimes within a few sessions, along with progress seen in reflex integration assessments.

Playing the CMT sound system independently can actually integrate the Moro, improve behavior, and health. As we can see in scientific research, many medical conditions are also addressed using cold laser/low level laser.  Cold laser works at a cellular level and increases ATP within the cell. An investment in the QRI Harmonic cold laser benefits the whole family.

Diseased and damaged nerve cells can actually be regenerated and repaired by cold laser to develop and regain communication.  So it is not surprising that children may see neurological changes both forward and what appears to be backward, called Moro reorganization as primitive reflexes integrate.

QRI Computer Harmonizer

QRI Computer Harmonizer is a  device that uses natural light and inaudible sound frequencies for maintaining optimum function. Simultaneously, it safeguards one from the harmful effects of radiation. (For example from cell phones, computers, TV, microwaves, and dirty electricity from household wiring, light bulbs, and other environmental geographic disturbances including underground streams, grid and lay-lines).The Harmonizer supports, strengthens and supplies all of the body’s frequencies or electrical impulses of energy for optimal function while balancing all the meridians, acupuncture points and distributing centers in the body, sometimes referred to as “Chakras”. Therefore, by strengthening your own Bio-field, one is no longer adversely affected by environmental influences that interfere with your body’s natural cellular function.

This 2 ½ inch USB thumb drive like unit is one-of-a-kind, its internationally patented circuitry, its lights, silent sweeping sounds, and its coils are all designed to bring balance within your environment and within the physical body holistically.

Below is a video of  seven Computer Harmonizers in USB ports.

Seven Harmonizers running at once.

Who needs a Harmonizer and Why?
Everyone needs a Harmonizer who wants to maintain balance and enhance their own energetic field for wellness and wholeness. It is especially important for young children and those under the age of 20 whose brain and nervous systems are still being formed. Their cells and bones, particularly the skull, is thinner and cellular growth is at its peak. Whatever information cells are receiving or being programmed with via frequencies from food, our environment and experiences are setting a foundation for health or disease.

How to Use it
Option #1
Simply insert the Harmonizer, like a thumb drive into the USB of your computer while in use or in the USB cigarette lighter of your car. (*Note: This device is not programed to store memory. But is used like an energetic entrainment device. Please observe that a series of 8 colored lights will be continually displayed sweeping from side to side representing the different frequencies that align with the energetic distribution centers in the body.)

Option #2
The Harmonizer can also be used directly on the body. Just insert the Harmonizer into the end of a USB extension cord that is plugged into the computer or an electrical plug-in. Place the Harmonizer wherever you feel led to strengthen or rebalance an area or remove an imbalance such as pain, discomfort, tension, etc. Simply explore the possibilities.

Invisible, man-made radiation and EMFs are continually coming from your computers and cell phones. The Harmonizer projects light waves and pulsed signals that are user friendly to our
body and into the environment helping to override any harmful effects while actually making EMF and radiation more harmonious to the environment.

How it Works
Like fine tuning an instrument, a specialized programed series of frequencies referred to as the “sweep chip” (a one of a kind of PEMF) tunes up the body. The “sweep chip” uses 1-2,000 Hz
Scalar Waves and PEMF plus an infinite harmonic series of frequencies that sweep through a rainbow of 8 color lights. This supports the natural attuning or entraining the body to a greater
vibrational field of wholeness based on Quantum Physics. It’s similar to filling in “gaps” or distortions and interference in our cellular communication caused by unnatural and manmade means. The series of 8 colors sweeping from side to side represent the different frequencies that align with the energetic distribution centers in the body also referred to as acupuncture meridians, bio fields, and chakras. This one of a kind technology was developed in 2000 and internationally patented in 2012. It has been used successfully in a variety of therapeutic devices.

For example, like a piano when addressing the law of resonance, when it sweeps back and forth and up and down the musical scale, every split second you are hitting a frequency or a harmonic
of that frequency that your body is needs at that time. Like a multiple vitamin, your body will absorb the nutrients “frequencies” that it needs. Like on a piano you have 12 steps on the keyboard, which repeats itself. For example, when starting with a low C and as you go up the scale 12 steps what happens when you hit the 13th key it’s back to the key of C, but it’s at a higher octave. And these octaves on the musical scale keep going higher and higher and higher and then it’s go beyond the hearing range into the megahertz and gigahertz because it’s the law of resonance. Another example is that you can hold down the low C without making it ring and hit a high C which will cause both Cs to oscillate because it is the law of resonance. Same way with a
tuning forks, if you vibrate or strike a low C and bring a high C tuning fork close to it they will both oscillate in sync because of the law of resonance. The same thing happens with the Harmonizer which causes the meridians to oscillate like strings on the musical piano bringing harmony, balance and wholeness in the body plus environment. This is all accomplished through lights, magnetic coils and scalar waves. As the frequencies are oscillating through the lights it causes the iris of the eyes to oscillate bringing balance to the body. What is amazing is that the light waves are bouncing off the walls bringing harmony to the environment. Scalar waves are
known to open up portals to higher spheres releasing higher energies into the physical dimension for balance and restoration.
